mural ordinance in the city

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES —The City Council this morning tentatively voted to adopt a new private property mural ordinance in the city, ending an 11-year ban that limited where artists could create the expansive outdoor pieces.

Under the new ordinance, murals will be identified as something other than signs, with a focus on murals as “original works of art,” according to Rick Coca, a spokesman for 14th District Councilman José Huizar, who has been one of the ordinance’s strongest proponents. The new ordinance defines murals as non-commercial works of art, distinguishing them from signs and ads, which are subject to different rules.

“Murals are one of the things that define our unique and diverse city,” Huizar said in a prepared statement. “Today, we as a city decided to embrace our history and re-affirm our commitment to supporting the arts, community building and beautifying our neighborhoods through murals.”

The measure, which must come back for final council approval, was approved 13-2. Councilmen Paul Koretz and Bob Blumenfield dissented.

The council actually considered two versions of a mural ordinance. One would have allowed murals on single-family homes, and the other would not. Huizar introduced an amendment to the latter option, asking for an opt-in clause and a plan from city departments for any communities that would like to allow murals on the residences. In the meantime, the ordinance will move forward as written.

According to a press release from Huizar’s office, CD 14, which includes most of Downtown, has twice as many murals as any other council district.

Spent some time up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, got back to LA last week to find some great coverage on the MCA Tribute Mural.

Los Angeles Magazine featured the David Flores x Delta Bravo tribute installation as the header to their “5 great pieces of street art to inspire you” While asking the question once more if murals in Los Angeles should be legal?

Dwell Magazine “NEIGHBORHOOD TO WATCH: Atwater Village in Los Angeles” The magazine lists the tribute mural as reason to keep your eye on this up and coming Los Angeles neighborhood. Acknowledging  Atwater’s “major aesthetic sensibilities”  Dwell covers Atwater Village Farm which is home to the MCA tribute mural and original location of the Beastie Boys G-Son Studios. Where albums like ‘Check Your Head’ have been recorded.

David Flores Art teamed up with Delta Bravo Urban Exploration to mark this iconic location as Site No. 001 for the team.

Works on paper, such as drawings, pastels, watercolors, prints, and photographs are typically not permanently displayed for conservation reasons. Instead, public access to these materials is provided by a dedicated print study room located within the museum. Murals generally remain where they have been painted, although many have been removed to galleries. Various forms of 20th-century art, such as land art and performance art, also usually exist outside a gallery. Photographic records of these kinds of art are often shown in galleries, however. Most museum and large art galleries own more works than they have room to display. The rest are held in reserve collections, on or off-site.
Similar to an art gallery is the sculpture garden (or “sculpture park”), which presents sculpture in an outdoor space. Sculpture installation has grown in popularity, whereby temporary sculptures are installed in open spaces during events like festivals.

Bob Burnquist’s "Dreamland" FLIP

“The time has finally come. After compiling footage of experimenting and failing, evolving and innovating, the first full part from Bob Burnquist is finally here. The part kicks off a brand new webisode series featuring Bob and his life in and around the space that has been so integral to his growth and contributions to skateboarding: his backyard in Southern California, better known as “Dreamland.” In this first episode, Bob introduces a brand new feature to his personal MegaRamp, the (Mega)Hip.
Without further ado, we’re happy to present “The Dreamland Series.” The six-part series will drop weekly at Oakley.com/dreamland”
